Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is a safe, noninvasive, and pain-free diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of your pet’s internal organs and soft tissues. It allows us to evaluate the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder, gallbladder, and other internal structures, as well as to detect abnormalities such as fluid buildup, cysts, tumors, abscesses, or pregnancy.

We often use ultrasound alongside other diagnostic tools like radiographs (X-rays) to provide a more complete understanding of your pet’s condition. Accurate interpretation of ultrasound images requires advanced training and clinical experience.

During the procedure, a specialized gel is applied to your pet’s skin, and a handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the area being examined. The transducer emits ultrasonic sound waves, which bounce off tissues at different rates depending on their density and fluid content. These echoes are converted into detailed, real-time images displayed on a monitor and saved for evaluation.

Ultrasound does not involve radiation and has no known side effects. Most pets do not require sedation or anesthesia for the procedure, although this may be considered in certain cases to reduce stress or movement. To ensure clear imaging, the area to be scanned is typically shaved.

When advanced or specialized imaging is needed, we can arrange for a board-certified veterinary radiologist to perform your pet’s ultrasound at our hospital. This provides access to expert-level diagnostic insight without needing to travel to a referral center.

If you have any questions about ultrasonography or what to expect during your pet’s procedure, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help guide you through every step.

The best care for your best friend!
