Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition caused by the parasite Dirofilaria immitis, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Once inside the body, the larvae travel through the bloodstream and mature in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels, causing significant damage over time.
In dogs, heartworm disease can go unnoticed in the early stages. As it progresses, symptoms may include coughing, fatigue, weight loss, difficulty breathing, and fluid accumulation in the abdomen—often signs of heart or lung damage. Treatment is available, but it is expensive, involves a lengthy recovery, and carries health risks. Prevention is safer, simpler, and far more cost-effective.
Although less common in cats, heartworm infection can still occur and may result in respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, or labored breathing. Diagnosis is more difficult in cats, and unfortunately, there is no approved treatment—which makes prevention especially critical.
