Healthy Beginnings for Your New Kitten

Congratulations on your new kitten! We’re excited to support you in giving them the healthiest possible start. Our kitten wellness program is designed to protect young cats during their most vulnerable months and set the foundation for lifelong health and well-being.

Kittens are highly susceptible to infectious diseases and parasites early in life, making preventive veterinary care for kittens essential during this critical growth stage.

Core Vaccines for Kittens

All kittens require a series of core vaccines for cats, typically starting around 8 weeks of age, to protect against serious and often life-threatening diseases. These include:

  • FVRCP vaccine, which protects against:
    • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), causing upper respiratory infections and eye issues
    • Calicivirus, which can lead to oral ulcers and respiratory illness
    • Panleukopenia (feline distemper), a severe and often fatal disease affecting the immune and digestive systems
  • Rabies vaccine, a fatal virus affecting the nervous system and required by law due to public health concerns

These vaccinations are essential for protecting your kitten, your household, and other pets from highly contagious diseases.

Lifestyle-Based Vaccines

Depending on your kitten’s environment and potential exposure, we may recommend additional non-core vaccines for cats, such as:

  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), a contagious virus that weakens the immune system and may lead to serious illness or cancer

Kittens are particularly vulnerable to FeLV, and we often recommend the initial vaccine series even for those expected to live indoors. Our team will create a customized vaccination plan based on your kitten’s lifestyle.

Why Indoor Cats Still Need Vaccines

Even if your kitten lives indoors, vaccinations for indoor cats are still important. Risks can include:

  • Accidental escapes through doors or windows
  • Exposure on balconies, patios, or shared spaces
  • Contact with other animals near windows or ventilation areas
  • Changes in lifestyle, such as travel or new pets in the home

Vaccinating your kitten provides essential protection against diseases that can be severe or fatal.

Parasite Prevention & Screening

Our kitten wellness exams include parasite prevention and testing, as many kittens are born with or quickly acquire parasites. Common concerns include:

  • Roundworms and hookworms, which can also affect humans
  • Giardia, a common cause of diarrhea
  • Coccidia, especially in multi-cat environments or shelters

We provide appropriate treatment and help establish a long-term parasite prevention plan.

FeLV/FIV Testing for Kittens

We recommend early testing for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). These contagious viruses can weaken the immune system and lead to serious health issues.

Testing is quick and performed in-clinic using a small blood sample. It is especially important for kittens from shelters, rescues, or unknown backgrounds. Early detection helps protect your kitten and any other cats in your home.
