Ultrasonography

Advanced Ultrasound Imaging for Dogs and Cats

Veterinary ultrasonography is a safe, noninvasive, and pain-free diagnostic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of your pet’s internal organs and soft tissues. This advanced imaging method allows us to closely examine structures such as the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder, and gallbladder, while also detecting conditions like fluid accumulation, cysts, tumors, abscesses, or pregnancy.

What Ultrasound Can Evaluate

Pet ultrasound imaging provides detailed insight into internal health and is commonly used to assess:

  • Heart and surrounding structures
  • Liver, kidneys, and gallbladder
  • Bladder and urinary system
  • Soft tissues and abdominal organs
  • Presence of masses, cysts, or fluid buildup

Ultrasound is often used alongside other diagnostic tools, such as X-rays, to give a more complete and accurate understanding of your pet’s condition. Proper interpretation of veterinary ultrasound images requires specialized training and clinical expertise.

How the Procedure Works

During an ultrasound exam, a specialized gel is applied to your pet’s skin, and a handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the area being examined. The transducer emits sound waves that travel through the body and reflect off tissues at varying speeds. These returning echoes are converted into detailed, real-time images displayed on a monitor and stored for further evaluation.

Safety, Comfort & Preparation

Ultrasound does not use radiation and has no known harmful side effects, making it a highly safe diagnostic option. Most pets do not require sedation or anesthesia, although it may be recommended in certain cases to reduce stress or movement during the procedure. To ensure clear and accurate imaging, the area being examined is usually shaved.

Access to Specialized Imaging

When more advanced diagnostics are needed, we can arrange for a board-certified veterinary radiologist to perform your pet’s ultrasound at our hospital. This allows access to expert-level diagnostic imaging for pets without the need to travel to an outside specialty center.
