Weight Management & Nutritional Counseling

Our doctors are passionate about whole-pet wellness, and body weight plays a direct role in everything from joint health and mobility to endocrine and cardiovascular function. Studies show that pets at a healthy weight live significantly longer and experience fewer chronic conditions compared to those who are overweight or obese.

Understanding Body Condition Score (BCS)

Veterinarians use the Body Condition Score (BCS) scale for pets to assess whether a pet is underweight, overweight, or at an ideal condition. The scale ranges from 1 to 9:

  • 1 = Emaciated
  • 4–5 = Ideal body condition
  • 9 = Severely obese

Learning how to evaluate your pet’s body condition at home can help you monitor their health between veterinary visits.

How to Check Your Pet’s Weight at Home

Step 1: Feel the Ribs
Gently run your hands along your pet’s sides, just behind the front legs.

  • Ideal (BCS 4–5): Ribs are easily felt without pressing and are not visibly protruding
  • Overweight (BCS 6–7): Ribs are harder to feel and require pressure
  • Obese (BCS 8–9): Ribs are difficult or impossible to feel
  • Underweight (BCS 1–3): Ribs are very prominent with minimal fat covering

Step 2: Check the Waist

View your pet from above while they are standing.

  • Ideal: A visible waist behind the ribs, creating an “hourglass” shape
  • Overweight: Little to no waist, with a rounded or oval body shape
  • Underweight: Excessively defined waist with visible bones

Step 3: Evaluate the Abdomen (Tuck-Up)

Look at your pet from the side.

  • Ideal: Abdomen tucks upward behind the ribcage
  • Overweight: Belly appears sagging or rounded
  • Underweight: Abdomen is sharply tucked

Why Healthy Weight Matters

Maintaining an ideal weight is one of the most important factors in your pet’s long-term health. Pets at a healthy weight benefit from:

  • Improved joint function and mobility
  • Reduced risk of chronic diseases
  • Better response to medical treatments
  • Increased lifespan and overall quality of life

Even small changes in weight can make a significant difference in your pet’s comfort and health.
